Day Trip to Beaufort, SC

October 10, 2020

Beaufort, SC is only about an hour south of Charleston, but can feel like a different world! We love to take day trips to this charming Southern town as often as we can. We hit the road Sunday morning after enjoying our morning coffee and packing the car- oh, and of course we brought along our favorite four-legged travel buddy!

The hunger had really kicked in by the time we got to Beaufort, so we stopped at one of our absolute favorite restaurants, Panini’s on the Waterfront! We had eaten at Panini’s on our first trip to the lowcountry last year and couldn’t wait to go back. They have a huge menu with tons of variety, and even a separate menu for dogs!

Nick ordered a surf and turf hoagie while I got fettuccine alfredo with crab- definitely not vegan, but when in Rome, right? 😉

After lunch, we spent quite a while strolling the streets downtown and taking in the sights at the waterfront park. One thing I really love about downtown Beaufort is that there are lots of new-age restaurants and shops in old historic buildings- this coexistence of old and new just makes the town that much more charming!

Next we piled into the car and drove to Port Royal, just a stone’s throw from Beaufort. I have been on a mission to see dolphins since moving to the lowcountry and had heard there was a chance of seeing them at The Sands Boardwalk. While we didn’t end up seeing any, the boardwalk and the little beach next to it were such a peaceful place to walk.

We never make a trip to Beaufort without visiting this little gem, Carolina Cider Company! It is the cutest little roadside store that sells cider, coffee, food, and lots of baking ingredients. A big bottle of muscadine cider may or may not have made its way home with us 🙂

Finally, after a day of exploring, we headed to the place that inspired this trip in the first place- Highway 21 Drive-In! I absolutely adore drive-in theaters; they’re so nostalgic to me and remind me of all of the times my family would visit our hometown’s drive-in when I was a kid. I found out months ago that Disney was releasing Hocus Pocus to drive-ins and have been dying to go! After changing into some comfy clothes and grabbing a big bucket of popcorn, the three of us settled in for the movie.

We truly can’t wait until our next trip to Beaufort! If you know of any other must-see places near Beaufort/Bluffton/Port Royal, I would love some suggestions!
